Included in Museum admission Mary Lee Bendolph, Gee’s Bend Quilts, and Beyond celebrates the resonance of the strikingly innovative, abstract quilts made by a group of African American women from Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Most true innovation is born of necessity rather than of excess leisure time, and such creative invention is often a means of survival. Gee’s Bend women transformed a basic necessity-the quilt- into a true work of art. The striking and often minimalist designs which make up the quilt tops are truly unique. Thirteen dramatically designed, richly colored, improvisational quilts created by Mary Lee Bendolph and her family - mother Aolar Mosely, daughter Essie B. Pettway & daughter-in-law Louisiana P. Bendolph - are presented alongside complex found object sculptures by noted African-American self-taught artist Thornton Dial and visionary “yard art” artist Lonnie Holly. A visually rich, emotionally emotionally evocative experience, this exhibition will delight and inspire all who see it. Click here to view more information on this special exhibition. |
